SAVE OUR SAILING SHIP

NOW UNDER DEMOLITION ORDER

“City of Adelaide” Clipper  (1864)

The “City of Adelaide” was purpose built to serve South Australia and from 1864 to 1887 the ship played an important role in the development of the South Australian colony.

One of only two surviving sailing ships to have carried emigrants from the British Isles to any destination in the world.

The only surviving sailing ship to give regular service between the UK and Australia.

The only survivor of the fine ships that ended their days in the timber trade from North America to the United Kingdom.

One of only two surviving composite clipper ships left in the world – the other is the “Cutty Sark”.

The world’s oldest clipper ship – she is nearly six years older than the “Cutty Sark”.

The most important historic ship to Australia still in existence.

Specifically a passenger ship and was designed to bring out immigrants to South Australia – 240,000 descendants of her passengers live in Australia today.

Vision & Mission:
We see a Heritage Seaport Museum in Port Adelaide with the historic 1864 clipper ship “City of Adelaide” as its prime exhibit – the flagship – to be the ideal focal interpretative center for Adelaide’s history.
